The Art of Music Pushes Out a Monster in Sound Tribe Sector 9
By Scotty G | July 8, 2008

A few months ago I was filtering through iTunes to see if any podcasts would catch my attention. I noticed a band called Sound Tribe Sector 9, a.k.a. STS9, and decided to subscribe to the freebie. Little did I know I was about to seriously expand and alter how I viewed music and the people who made it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not as if it made me realize that we’re being controlled by the man and we need to break free or any of that hippie bullshit, but it was simply a very refreshing change to an aspect of my life that is a huge source of inspiration as well as motivation: music.
STS9 is a group of five guys from California who one day decided they were going to kick some serious Mountain Dew Amped up ass in the form of live music. I have known about them for a few years from a good friend of mine who has frequented various different shows with me over the years, but I never took the opportunity to sit down and listen to any of their albums. I knew a few things about them back then and that was that they were that band that didn’t really use any lyrics in any of their songs or jams and a lot of their fan base spent many hours rolling their balls off before, during and after shows. Not to say that they
are not enjoying and appreciating the music, but it’s just not the most appealing atmosphere for me…but then again I was once young and did my share of experimenting. The point is that sometimes a good thing can be right under your nose but unless you give it a shot, you’ll never know the opportunities and experiences missed. I actually attended music festivals that these guys played at and was probably skipping their show to see Donna the Buffalo play. Please don’t make any preconceived notions about me based on that comment.
When you have about 45 minutes to an hour to sit down and put on a show or listen to one of their albums, that’s the best time to listen to them. You really get a better grasp of what they are about and you are able to appreciate them much more. STS9 does a lot of different things that draw my attention but I think the main thing about them and their music that really drives me to become an avid fan is their ability to play a fairly seamless show, or at least give that impression, while really enjoying it to the fullest. I will have to keep you guys updated as I begin to get to know this band a lot more, but I can tell you that their music is very smooth, synthesized, instrumental and more importantly it makes sense to listen to it. I can’t describe what that means but it’s great music to recharge your battery on. All I have to go by are podcasts, one album and the shows I watch on YouTube, but I am really looking forward to seeing these guys with Umphrey’s McGee at Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary, NC on July 31st. This will most definitely be one of my most anticipated shows of all time as I will be seeing Umphrey’s for the first time in five years and STS9 for the first time ever!!! Good times.
Make the jump for a taste of the show and link to the podcast…
So I could definitely sit back and talk about how I am getting a softee listening to the Peaceblaster08 podcast, but I’d rather just wrap this up, play some Tiger Woods and wait for the big guy (GhostLikeSwayze) to call me and tell me how awesome it is that I decided to write something on the bubble. Get ready people because SkeezyGeezy is about to get nasty on the OB. Kick your feet up and enjoy some good music while checking in on what I got to say. The only reason I’m doing this is to prove a point that nobody gives a shit what I have to say or think. Preeeeeeciate it!

Nice Blog.
I agree with Mr. Fulton above… definitely better live (come on, they have crystals on stage!)and they are touring right now with Umphrey’s!!! What more could you want!?!
They will be in Myrtle beach 7.30 and Cary, NC on 7.31…
Then the ultimate shows are 4 nights at New years in Atlanta… along with Widespread Panic right down the street… its a hard toss up becuase of how very different the two band are… then the panic fans make fun of those going to STS9 and the “hipster” STS9 kids make fun of those going to Panic… quite the battle!!
If you like STS9 you may also like the Disco Biscuits.

I have never seen them live but I am a big fan of STS9. I started listening to them after I saw a featured show on the Live Music Archive back in the day that Skeezy linked to above. I checked it out the other day and they have a little under 500 shows up there. Not all of the shows are soundboard but most include streaming capabilities and it is nice to listen to while at work. The instrumental aspect makes STS9 perfect for work.
I wish I was going to be able to make the Cary show because I haven’t seen Umphrey’s either. It seems so rare that they come around this way. Let me know how the shows were after you go.
